Your stylist lightens your hair and tones it to give you the blonde shade you want. But toner is not permanent, so it fades over time. It is a demi-permanent colour service that helps soften and neutralise warm tones after bleaching. Because bleached hair is often porous, toner fades even faster. Heat, sun and minerals can also speed up fading and make blonde hair look yellow again.
Why does my blonde hair turn yellow?
Step 1: Wash less, wash smarter
Every wash removes a little toner, so washing too often makes it fade faster. Strong or clarifying shampoos can strip colour even more quickly. Use a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo for bleached hair, like the Blonde Miracle, and wash only 2–3 times a week with lukewarm water.
Step 2: Use pigment maintenance
Use purple shampoo for yellow tones or blue shampoo for slight orange tones 1–2 times a week. If you want something you can leave on longer, choose a no-yellow or no-orange mask. Do not overuse these products, as they can make hair look dull or over-toned.
Step 3: Protect from heat
Heat from flat irons, curling irons and hot dryers can break down toner and open the hair cuticle, which makes colour fade faster. Limit heat styling when you can and always use a heat protector, like Style-IN Thermal Spray.
Step 4: Protect from the environment
Sun exposure can break down colour molecules. Cool blonde tones, such as ash or violet, fade quickly and leave warmer yellow tones behind. Use a leave-in UV protector, like Argan Age Bi-phase Conditioner or Treatment, to help protect your blonde.
Step 5: Prevent mineral build-up
Hard water minerals, such as iron, copper and chlorine, can build up on the hair. This can make blonde hair look dull, yellow or brassy, even if toner is still present. Chlorine can also strip toner and may leave hair looking yellow or even green. Rinse your hair well before and after swimming. Oils, silicones and hair sprays can also build up on the hair. This coating can make toner look faded or uneven and may cause slight yellowing over time.
Use a clarifying or chelating shampoo every 2–4 weeks to remove buildup. Blonde Miracle Shampoo is a good option for this. If you live in an area with hard water, a shower filter may also help.
Step 6: Maintain hair health and strength
Bleached hair is very porous, which means it absorbs toner quickly but also loses it quickly. The more damaged the hair, the faster toner fades. Use a repair treatment, such as Shecare Repair or Megix One Up, at least once a week to help improve porosity. Healthier hair holds toner for longer.
Step 6: Regular salon maintenance
Even with good care, toner will still fade over time. It is a semi- or demi-permanent colour service, so some fading between appointments is normal. Plan to refresh your toner every 4–8 weeks, depending on your hair condition, lifestyle and the tone you want.
