Salon strategy for a clean blonde

Bleached blonde hair turns yellow because when you remove the natural pigment, you expose underlying warm tones that are naturally in the hair.  A toner is a demi-permanent colour service designed to refine and neutralise underlying warmth after lightening. Unlike permanent colour, it does not fully penetrate or permanently alter the hair structure, which means it will gradually fade over time.

Maintaining a refined blonde is a combination of:

  • Correct in-salon formulation
    • Correct lift
    • Strong, precise toning
  • Consistent homecare. Recommending professional maintenance products and regular toning services ensures optimal longevity, clarity, and shine.

You can’t tone what you haven’t lifted. Aim for a clean pale yellow (level 9–10) before toning.  If the bleach doesn’t lift the hair light enough, you’re left with stronger yellow tones.  This happens if:

  • Developer is too weak
  • Processing time is too short. Avoid under-processing due to time pressure.
  • Hair is resistant or previously colored

If the hair is left too yellow, the toner cannot fully neutralize.

Use a good quality bleach with controlled lift.  Fast lift bleaches are great but could result in uneven results.

Processing time is critical.  Most bleaches stop working as soon as it starts drying out, which means you need the maximum amount of lift before it dries out.  You might have to opt for a stronger developer, after taking into account the resilience of the hair.

Even saturation is key. Uneven saturation will lead to uneven lift and evenly uneven yellowing hair.

Use the correct opposing pigments – Violet to neutralize yellow and blue-violet to neutralize yellow-orange.  Use your colour wheel to guide you in the process of deciding on the correct toner to use.

The toner should be strong enough for the level that you reached with your bleach process.  No use using a level 10 toner if you only managed to lift up to a level 8.  Weak toners fade fast and allow warmth through.
