These terms describe different things — not product quality.

Vegan means no animal or animal-derived ingredients.
Natural means naturally sourced ingredients.
Organic means ingredients were grown under organic farming standards.

Vegan” means the product contains NO animal-derived ingredients. They exclude ingredients like:

  • Keratin (animal-derived)
  • Collagen
  • Honey, Beeswax, Royal Jelly
  • Silk proteins
  • Lanolin

A vegan product is also often cruelty-free — but not always.  Vegan refers to the ingredients.  Cruelty-free refers to animal testing.

Many vegan hair products use synthetic ingredients because removing animal-derived ingredients often requires formulators to replace them with alternatives that still provide performance, stability, preservation, fragrance, or texture.  That does NOT automatically make the product “bad”. Many synthetic ingredients are highly safe and effective. A well-formulated vegan product can perform exceptionally well but stylists should understand that vegan does not necessarily mean fully natural or chemical-free.

Natural” means the product contains ingredients sourced from nature, such as plants, minerals, or naturally derived oils. Examples include Aloe vera, Coconut oil, Shea butter,  Essential oils, Botanical extracts, etc.

But what many consumers don’t realize is that there is NO universal legal definition for “natural” in haircare in many countries.  That means that a product can be marketed as “natural” even if it still contains some synthetic ingredients for preservation, performance, fragrance or stability.

So “natural” does not automatically mean:

  • Chemical-free
  • Organic
  • Better performing
  • Safer

Organic” refers to how ingredients are FARMED and processed.

Organic ingredients are typically grown:
• Without synthetic pesticides
• Without GMOs
• With stricter farming standards

Certified organic products usually require verification from recognized certification bodies. A product can contain SOME organic ingredients without being fully organic, e.g. “Made with organic argan oil” does not mean the entire formula is organic. That is why we indicate our products as x% organic.

The best professional products balance:

  • Performance
  • Ingredient safety
  • Stability
  • Client preferences
  • Sustainability goals

Synthetic” does NOT automatically mean that a product is unsafe, toxic or low quality. “Natural” does NOT automatically mean that a product is safer, better performing or less irritating.

The real focus should be on:

  • Formula balance
  • Ingredient quality
  • Suitability for the client’s hair type and scalp condition
  • Brand transparency
